FAMILY VACATIONS IN PATAGONIA:

A wonderful adventure for kids, parents and grandparents alike, Patagonia has been welcoming families for years.

With a landscape riddled with pristine rivers, streams, lakes, prairies and flowering woods, children can capture a better understanding of the topography, geography, culture and wildlife of the region. Depending on the season, family activities range from skiing, hiking, climbing, cycling, 4x4 cruising, horseback riding, fishing, kayaking, rafting, canopy, windsurfing and much more.

An exciting option for families is a visit to an estancia, or working ranch, which provides a view of farm life in Patagonia. Families have the opportunity to participate in ranch activities like sheep shearing and horseback riding.

For those interested in dinosaurs, families can visit a live excavation site where paleontologists are currently unearthing some of the largest dinosaurs ever found. About a decade ago, the Argentinosaurus was discovered along the formations of the Rio Limay in the Neuquen province. This dinosaur is believed to be the largest animal to have ever walked the earth, weighing in at over 100 tons and measuring about 123 feet in length.

The Perito Moreno glacier (3 miles wide and standing 60 meters above the lake below) is the only growing glacier in the area. The glacier is part of the Patagonian ice field and one of the region's most impressive national sites. Visitors twelve years or older wanting a closer look at the glacier may do a two-hour guided trek on the tip of this UNESCO World Heritage Site glacier.

One of the most exciting opportunities for families is a visit to Peninsula Valdes. There, during whale season, the Southern Right whale can be spotted swimming near the coast.

Natural parks, rivers, streams, glaciers, petrified forests, prairies and woods, along with thousands of miles of mountain range create a once in a lifetime vacation for families.
